The Inspiration
In the summer of 2017, a group of AS Level students joined hands and came up with the idea to start an adult literacy program for the support staff of BCP Gulberg. They named the project “AGAAHI”. The idea came from very compassionate and empathetic observations by the students. They used to see the support staff struggling in their day-to-day work; some of them had a hard time understanding the instructions given by their superiors, to the extent that they were given warnings. This all motivated our students to do something for the support staff.
The Journey
Agaahi is a student-led CSR initiative that aims to enhance the skills of support staff. Students at BCP Gulberg collected data on the literacy level of all support staff, including the office, lab, janitorial, and security staff. They designed a curriculum that included Mathematics, Urdu, English, and Personal Enhancement. A team of 18 volunteer students was selected, and three were made coordinators for smooth execution. The support staff was divided into categories, A and B, and taught according to their academic level. The school supported the initiative from beginning to end by sharing resources, supporting curriculum development, and contacting the support staff.
Key Learnings
The project aimed to include the support staff in the academic cycle and enhance their capabilities by teaching them essential skills needed today. After the first session, all observed a drastic change in the persona and work of the support staff. At one end, the project made students a responsible part of society, where they taught a suitable curriculum that enabled the staff members to enhance their communication and life skills.
The Impact
The project proved to be an apparent success for students and staff members. One of the staff members, M. Naseem, after Agaahi, decided to continue his studies and is currently doing B.A. Two office boys, M. Nadeem and Majid Ali, were promoted as Lab Staff members, and our former lady searcher, Saira Naseem, was promoted as an office staff member. Also, most of our student volunteers are now in renowned local and foreign universities like McGill, Jacobs, Sabanci, Bilgi, LUMS, IBA, NUST, and FAST. The project benefits the students working on the same pattern designed by their seniors and building their profiles on community service.
Way Forward
Agahi has become a salient project for BCP students and continues with the efforts of school management as well as the interest of newcomers. The project has proven to be an excellent investment for students and staff members.
