Zee Bags

Zymal Umar

The Inspiration
Zymal Umar founded Zee Bags, a company that creates biodegradable paper bags to reduce pollution. She was inspired to start the company after seeing plastic bags littering the streets and blocking sewer systems. Zymal also felt sympathy for those living in poverty and wanted to find a solution to these environmental issues. She discussed her ideas with her parents and teachers, which led to the creation of Zee Bags. The company has since grown and continues to impact society positively.
The Journey
Zymal Umer started making newspaper bags with jute rope that biodegraded quickly, as young as eight. She has since then come a long way and evolved in and explored a great deal of what started as a hobby. She now uses... a special material with elegant decor and her name on a card. Her teachers and school supported her with the design and decor and showcased her work. Since she is a student and juggles her time, she now has a team to make the bags and decorate them by herself. The bags are sold in shops, at fares, and online in bulk. All profits go to charity or are distributed to widows and disabled people. She got featured in TV shows and young talent platforms by the local and international media. This was a source of immense encouragement for Zymal, her parents, and her school.
Key Learnings
In society, a small act has the potential to ignite significant change. Even an individual's small-scale actions can yield remarkably positive outcomes on a national and global scale. When people embrace inexpensive and readily accessible environmentally friendly alternatives, it can have a profound impact on sustainability efforts. Importantly, age poses no barrier to making a positive contribution to society. Regardless of age, everyone can make a difference and contribute meaningfully to creating a better world for all. By recognizing the power of small acts and individual efforts, transformative changes can be realized, leading to a more sustainable and inclusive future.
The Impact
When she started her project, there was no option for biodegradable bags. After the introduction of biodegradable bags by Zymal Umer, people have gradually started to avoid using plastic bags and have tended to use the bags made by her. This preference for the use of biodegradable bags is also because of the awareness among people, created by electronic and digital media, about the environmental damage that plastic bags cause. Zymal Umer sincerely believes that this awareness is increasing quickly, and she hopes that the use of plastic bags will soon be legally banned in the country.
Way Forward
Zymal would like to do similar projects in the future that interest her skills and flair for art and sustainable craft.
