Power Generating Tiles

The Inspiration
While observing energetic students playing and running around during recess, the LAP team of students recognized the untapped potential of harnessing the energy generated by human motion. Unlike solar and wind energy systems, which are dependent on external factors such as sunlight and wind, a footstep power generator operates independently of such factors. It is a renewable source of energy that is cost-free and derived from the movement of individuals. Given Pakistan's substantial youth population, this solution holds promise in addressing the current energy shortage in the country. However, they strongly emphasize the importance of ensuring that their solution is environmentally friendly and sustainable, aiming to minimize the adverse impacts associated with power generation.
The Journey
The journey of creating a prototype for electricity production has been a challenging yet rewarding experience. From researching and designing to testing and refining, every step has been filled with excitement and determination. It has required creativity, problem-solving, and perseverance, but the potential impact of sustainable electricity generation has made it all worthwhile. This journey is a great example of youth empowerment and encouragement. From the day they came up with this idea until now, they have been received with warmth and appreciation. Every individual has motivated them and helped them in their own capacities. It has also made them realize how a ray of hope can do wonders. Developing this prototype and receiving positive responses has induced a new sense of patriotism in students, who are determined to make every effort to help their country flourish.
Key Learnings
The project served as a valuable learning experience, encompassing various aspects such as academics, research methodology, social skills, and responsibility. The students encountered several... challenges throughout the process. Firstly, balancing the project execution with their studies proved to be a significant challenge. Additionally, sourcing suitable and sustainable materials at an affordable cost required extensive online and market research. Technical issues related to component connectivity arose during the prototype creation, and they faced difficulties in procuring materials that were initially out of stock. Despite these challenges, the success of the prototype greatly boosted their confidence and provided them with valuable exposure. The positive response received at the BKC Educator's Expo demonstrated the welcoming and supportive nature of the community towards new and innovative ideas, dispelling the notion that youth in Pakistan are discouraged.
The Impact
The amount of electrical energy produced in the project depends on the applied pressure from the body, with greater pressure resulting in higher energy output. By strategically placing these tiles in suitable locations, such as parks, malls, and schools, a significant amount of electricity can be generated, potentially reducing electricity costs. As the project is currently in the prototype stage, its full impact is yet to be realized. However, the tile has already received immediate appreciation within the branch. Students' efforts were recognized and acknowledged when they were awarded the "Best Innovative Project" at the Educators Expo held at BCP Karakorum Campus in 2022. This recognition further highlights the potential of the project and its innovative approach.
Way Forward
Firstly, the team is actively seeking to establish contact with scholars specializing in the field of electrical engineering to conduct testing and verification of their prototype. They are currently in discussions with the Head of Department from NUST and Comsat University Islamabad for potential collaboration. Secondly, their plan involves pitching their project at the National Incubation Center in Islamabad, aiming to explore opportunities for further development and support. Additionally, upon discovering the SPARKTANK initiative of Beaconhouse, they have expressed a keen interest in pursuing their idea within that platform as well.
