My Milestone
by
Zara and Abdullah

The Inspiration
While studying the unit "Mapping it out" under the global context of orientation in space and time, Zahra & Abdullah embarked on an exploration of various types of maps, coordinates, and Google Earth app. They utilised Google Earth to... gain insights into the geographical features of different locations. They came across the renowned photojournalist Paul Salopek and his "Out of Eden Walk," where he documented a 21,000-mile journey through the creation of milestones. The team found inspiration in Salopek's skillful mapping of his travels and got motivation to create their own milestone, conveying the message "Slow down and observe." Their milestone aimed to remind people to take the time to appreciate and understand their surroundings.
The Journey
Zahra and Abdullah did an in-depth research to reach the culmination. They followed these major steps: 1. Understanding maps, mapping technologies, such as Google Earth & GPS. 2. A detailed study of different articles related to the strategic importance of maps. 3. A thorough analysis of Paul Salopek’s 'out of Eden walk'. 4. Jotting down their own ideas (Various tentative locations). 5. Finalising the plan. 6. Recording their own milestones. 7. Presentation of the milestone. 8. Creating the maps of their own.
Key Learnings
After culminating this project, Zahra and Abdullah along with their class started to observe the world around them in a far systematic manner. They have incorporated their observation skills in a number of other projects and it is one of the major highlights of the many takeaways from this project. Moreover, Paul Salopek's slow journalism made them understand how important it is to preserve, rediscover and revisit the footsteps of the ancestors. In short, they learned that slowing down helps think and preserve the insights.
The Impact
It will slow the people down and make them observe their surroundings. Also, they will know what's happening around them. Through these milestones they wanted the world to see their city through their lens. The milestones have given people a glance into the magnificent history of Multan and the beautiful suburbs/villages that this place is rich in.
Way Forward
As an extension to their project, Zahra & Abdullah hope to raise a voice for the preservation of the historical monuments present in their city and to work towards the progress of the rural belt falling in the same domain.
