Bio capsule
planting trees
By
Haniya Shoaib

The Inspiration
Clean and green environment is a big need of the current times. Haniya inherited her keen interest in plantation from her father; member of the doctor community and plants 2000 plants, on a yearly basis. During the Dubai trip, he observed Groasis Ecological Water Saving Technology being used for desert plantations. Groasis Waterboxx helps plants grow with 99% less water. Haniya, being an enthusiast, thought about implementing this high-tech, low-cost agriculture solution in her father’s yearly planting campaign. The idea could not flourish due to her father’s busy schedule, but Haniya continued experimenting while availing of the restricted lifestyle during Covid-19 times, and after many failures, she finally remained successful in making Bio-Capsule with some dissolvable material available at home.
The Journey
After many failed attempts, including use of mud and water-filled balloons and making mud balls, Haniya successfully created a bio-capsule using paper cups to retain water for plants for a period of more than a month. She planted 10 plants with bio-capsules and 10 without, and the ones with bio-capsules thrived while the others died. She expanded the idea to her father's hospital and local community, using ‘Matkaas’ made of "kachii matti" and created 20 Bio–Capsules, for plants to survive naturally during their initial stages of growth. She shared her success story with school and encouraged others to implement bio-capsule idea in neglected areas. Haniya further aimed to spread the message to the wider community through the platform of LAP.
Key Learnings
- Big thinking followed by appropriate actions can lead to bigger changes.
- Early care has a long-lasting impact on plant life.
- Growth mindset takes setbacks as a chance to learn from, and to improve oneself till success is achieved.
- Awakening of conscience among students and others for environmental sustainability.
- Collaboration and engagement of community members in the growth and implementation of ideas brought greater benefits.
- Polishing skills like self-empowerment and resilience while initiating and pursuing ideas for bringing change in society and the wider world.
- Importance of environmental sustainability for all creatures living on the planet Earth.
The Impact
The idea influenced people closer to Haniya (peers, relatives) to make their own bio capsule and plant trees with it. It directly and indirectly was disseminated among the school and closer community, and was a big advancement, in reference to saving the plants during their early stages of life. Haniya also submitted her project to the District Forest office and received an appreciation certificate for her efforts. It became a source of inspiration for all the stakeholders and generated an empathetic, philanthropic, and benevolent approach towards the closer community in her peers, neighbours, and relatives. It strengthened and broadened their vision to come out of the box and think big to make this planet a better place to live in.
Way Forward
The District Forest Authorities showed commitment to share this project with the relevant technical department to practically apply it and get our land benefited from it. I believe if the district government uses this idea in upcoming plantation campaigns, and disseminates it with other districts and provinces, with remarkable results, we can achieve our national goal of ‘Go Green’.
