The Inspiration
This project “ Umeed-e-Sahr” is a result of relentless efforts of the student-led BMI-B Team, which initially started off as a Global Perspectives (C.A.I.E) project on ‘Poverty and Inequality’ in the winters of 2020. It was impossible to cover the vast topic; therefore, the most sensitive areas of poverty and inequality in society were targeted. The project continued to inspire, even after its completion, and propelled the students towards leading this initiative further, under the project title “Umeed-e-Sahr”. The sole purpose of Umeed-e-Sahr is to eradicate educational inequalities and disparities among different regions of Pakistan, to gather funds to help the poverty–stricken section of our community, and give rights to differently-abled people.
The Journey
A team of like-minded individuals founded Umeed-e-Sahr with an intention to alleviate poverty, facilitate schools, provide quality education, and support people having Down Syndrome. However, the initiatives came to... a halt, due to the pandemic. Data was collected using Google Forms. Virtual meetings were conducted with governmental officials, humanitarian sector representatives, anthropologists, commissioners, school administrations, and NGO personnel. By joining hands with ‘Taaleem Foundation’, ‘Akhuwat’ and ‘Down Syndrome Club Pakistan’, Umeed-e- Sahr came into existence. The cooperation with Taleem Foundation led to the discovery of Kuchlaq, a subdivision of Quetta. It was densely populated, but the educational standards were compromised. Funds were collected for school renovations, through the website, along with an awareness campaign running through various social media platforms.
Key Learnings
The journey of BEC has demonstrated the power of small initiatives in bringing about positive changes in society. Accomplishing their goals through teamwork, the organisation has highlighted the significance of collaboration and coordination in achieving collective success. Embracing the challenges posed by the Covid-19 pandemic, BEC effectively utilised digital forums to engage and interact, unveiling the immense potential of digital technology in fostering connectivity and innovation. Moreover, a key learning throughout the process has been the realisation that age should not be a barrier to making a positive contribution to society. BEC has showcased that individuals of all ages can play an active role in driving social progress and creating meaningful impact. Through their endeavours, BEC has inspired others to embrace the power of small actions, teamwork, digital innovation, and the limitless potential of individuals to make a difference in the world.
The Impact
Umeed e- Sahr worked hard to pilot initiatives that led to an in-depth impact with the help of collected funds. They were utilised for the renovation of the school’s infrastructure in the remote areas of Kuchlaq, Balochistan. The initial objective of providing a safe learning environment for students was achieved successfully. Students were also facilitated in terms of online education. Major steps were also being taken in aiding Akhuwat to alleviate poverty.
Way Forward
- Work along Taaleem Foundation to help improve educational infrastructure in other areas of Balochistan like Kohlu, Loralai, Sui, and Zhob, etc.
- Hope to improve the poor and working-class situation, with the support of Akhuwat, by offering reasonable livelihood options through soft loans.
- Through the Down Syndrome Club Pakistan platform, steps will be taken to ensure the rights and opportunities for people with Down syndrome in Pakistan.
- To promote the cause by joining hands with a well-renowned UK-based platform; “Go Pool It”. It is a new social media app that facilitates the process of helping a cause, by allowing donations, based on photographs and videos.
