Trash to Treasure

The Inspiration
Inspired by global environmental issues, waste segregation in their school, and the government's "billion tree tsunami" initiative, a group of students from Tipu sultan Campus embarked on a project called "Trash to Treasure." With Pakistan facing climate... change challenges like floods, melting glaciers, droughts, and habitat loss, they aimed to tackle land pollution, a major contributor to climate change. Their objective was to convert kitchen waste into compost using traditional and mechanised methods, making a positive impact. Due to the lack of a standardised recycling industry, household waste is often disposed of in water bodies or landfills, exacerbating land pollution. Their project also addressed the issue of food waste, which is frequently discarded, leading to the wastage of valuable resources.
The Journey
The project focused on environmental protection, effective waste management, innovative compost making, and generating revenue. Social media and school platforms were utilised to raise awareness about the importance of kitchen garbage compost. Students collected old buckets and converted them into compost bins, which were distributed among school children and nearby communities. Once the compost was ready, it was used in the kitchen garden and was also sold to the nearby nursery. The group started with one bin and now have almost 40-50 bins in the community where composting is done successfully.
Key Learnings
During the project, students learned that individuals can have a positive impact on the environment they live in, with a little bit of innovative thinking and responsible pursuits. As the group they learned about the importance of creating awareness about environmental issues and to take responsible actions to address them. They learned that waste segregation and management is a crucial aspect of environmental sustainability. Meeting the SDGs (Sustainable Development Goals) is also an important goal, as it helps to make Pakistan clean and green.
The Impact
Waste burning is responsible for 10% of the carbon emissions in the world. By this process, we will be able to reduce the carbon emissions as most of the waste will be utilised in compost making. The reactor will resolve the issue of the lengthy process of compost making which will encourage the people to utilise the organic waste which is indeed a treasure.
Way Forward
BEC's journey has exemplified the transformative power of small initiatives in creating positive societal changes. Achieving their goals through effective teamwork, they have underscored the significance of collaboration and coordination in driving collective success. In the face of the Covid-19 pandemic, BEC harnessed digital platforms to engage and connect, unveiling the vast potential of technology in fostering interaction and innovation. An invaluable lesson learned throughout the process is that age should never hinder individuals from making a meaningful contribution to society. BEC has inspired others to recognize the impact of small actions, embrace teamwork, leverage digital advancements, and embrace the unlimited potential within individuals to make a lasting difference in their communities.
