Growing up in a diverse society, Hajra observed people from different backgrounds. Feeling privileged, she developed a strong sense of responsibility towards their community. During a village visit, she noticed the untapped potential of underprivileged children. Despite having education access, barriers prevented talent showcasing. To address this, Hajra volunteered to assist and empower these children. Her goal was to make a global impact through this small initiative, bridging social disparities and witnessing remarkable achievements. Creating opportunities and fostering unity for a better society is what Hajra believes in.
The Journey
In early 2021, Hajra conceived an idea for a project. She created art pieces in the form of bookmarks for an exhibition and sold them to family members. Later, they expanded sales to... friends, teachers, and administrators at school. The project received high praise and support from the school head and Cluster convener, who encouraged her to turn it into something more meaningful. After achieving the fundraising goal, she purchased basic stationery items, Math and Urdu learning books for students of classes 1 and 2. Hajra had a detailed meeting with the staff at Government Girls Elementary School Chak 50, and created small gift hampers containing items that are typically considered inaccessible for children in the local community.
Key Learnings
During the course of the project, Hajra learned about the importance of collaboration and the importance of giving back to society. Another important learning has been to take one step at a time and analyse its impact. Every step counts! Children from underprivileged areas have great potential to be discovered and utilised. These children need a push to motivate themselves to work and achieve their desired goals.
The Impact
After seeing the positive impact of the project on children in the local community, Hajra decided to extend her efforts to other rural areas in need. The children who received the materials gained confidence and immediately started using them in productive activities. Some children even talked about how the resources would help them achieve their dreams in areas like art, craft, and sports. While the project may have only made a small difference in narrowing social gaps, Hajra is confident that these will create a remarkable difference in the lives of many.
Way Forward
The aim of such an initiative was to bridge the social and financial divide that broadens the disparity. Hajra is all geared up to continue her efforts in this regard and is confident that her contributions will lead the socially deprived children towards the attainment of their set targets. While this project doesn't end here, it will be work in progress as the project endeavours to benefit the underprivileged and those whose potential is untapped due to the lack of resources and opportunities.
