SCICON

The Inspiration
Students from Beaconhouse Jubilee Campus, participated in various college and university Olympiads, gaining valuable experience and winning awards. However, they realised that younger students in their batches and lower levels lacked awareness of such competitions. To address this, they organised an Olympiad with a lower difficulty level, providing exposure to younger students and showcasing the fun and practical side of science. Their aim was to change the perception that science is boring and solely based on textbooks. By creating a familiar and enjoyable environment, they hoped to empower younger students to succeed in higher-level competitions in the future.
The Journey
An executive body of capable students was formed to oversee the program, creating a framework for the Olympiad. Modules were divided into two groups: Group A (physics, biology, mathematics, chemistry) and Group B (creative building, coding, puzzle solving, murder mystery). Teams of six members chose two modules from each group. After school board approval, teachers and student module heads planned activities, logistics, and materials. A dedicated website was created, and teams for photography, registrations, and volunteers ensured smooth operations. Extensive promotion occurred within the school and neighbouring institutions. The event held from January 17th to 19th, 2020, exceeded expectations with positive feedback, effective time management, and goal achievement.
Key Learnings
The main learning points of the project were that modern students are intelligent and capable of handling challenging tasks. They have a strong understanding of the concepts they learn and can apply them effectively, especially in a stimulating and enjoyable environment. By incorporating elements of fun and competition, any subject can be made engaging and interesting for students.
The Impact
The event proved to be a resounding success, adding another iconic event to the school's repertoire, thanks to the science society. It introduced a reimagined science competition that has become highly anticipated each year. The upcoming heads of the school will continue the legacy by organising their own version of SCICON, allowing students to showcase their knowledge and problem-solving skills while fostering teamwork. This experience will serve as valuable preparation for future competitions at higher levels.
