The Inspiration
A group of inspiring students from Cantt Campus Multan initiated the idea of ‘Nurturing the Nature’ by founding a kitchen garden. While working under the school motto ‘Clean and Green School and Surrounding’, they noticed the wasted and neglected patch of land adjacent to the school building. They discussed and put forward the proposal of raising a kitchen garden there, and successfully convinced the club in charge and the school management to step forward for this noble cause. Being the active members of life skill club they persuaded their school fellows to join hands in the project of ‘Nurturing the Nature’.
The Journey
During Dignity Week, determined students initiated the "Nurturing the Nature" project. They transformed a wasteland into an organic kitchen garden, donating its produce to the school's junior staff. Hania Hamza, from an agricultural business family, passionately led the effort, supported by her parents. Emerging leaders Inaya Qadeer and Zakriya campaigned inside and outside the school, successfully raising funds and resources. Despite initial challenges, their unwavering enthusiasm and conviction inspired hope. With the assistance of janitorial staff and school gardeners, these creative young minds set a living example of environmental sustainability, dignity, and community service for their peers.
Key Learnings
- Realisation of environmental sustainability among students and their parents.
- Engaging communities in the development of multiple ideas for urban forestation, a step towards Green school and surrounding along with reduction in carbon emission
- Helpful in instilling core values of Beaconhouse and skills like creativity, analytical and critical thinking skills amongst the students.
- Developing student understanding that Dignity is an ethos nurtured by every community member, every day, in every interaction.
- Embedding employability and entrepreneurship in school curriculum through student club activities and outsourced skill teaching.
The Impact
The project fostered collaboration and teamwork within the school community, imparting the importance of environmental sustainability on human life. It gained recognition and... admiration nationally and internationally, inspiring all stakeholders. During an official visit, Beaconhouse School System COO Ali Khan, Senior Manager Education Operations Ms. Kanwal Baber, and Cluster Director Centre Mr. Majid commended the school's efforts. Ms. Baber facilitated connections with Green Schools in England and introduced the project to James Dyson, an Environmental Consultant at Ricardo and Director of Editors for Impact. Dyson conducted online sessions, guiding students on sustainability and providing environmental solutions. The project instilled empathy and philanthropy in the students towards their community, fostering self-reliance and problem-solving skills.
Way Forward
This project has broadened the vision of students’ contribution towards environmental sustainability. In the next step, they are going to plant fruit trees on the roadside, that would affect the environment more positively. Plantation on an individual and collective level is one of the key modes of combating deforestation and a continuous effort is required to reverse the adverse effects of deforestation.
