Medicinal Pakistan
The Inspiration
The idea revolved around a simple plantation activity that led to a bigger and useful cause of creating a medicinal garden. The concept will eventually benefit the community, taking Pakistan into the list of countries known for the production and trade of Medicinal Plants.
The Journey
A group of students from Beaconhouse Chakwal proposed the idea of 'Medicinal Pakistan' after being inspired by then Prime Minister's plantation week and the discussion on medicinal uses of plants during science lesson. They convinced the school management to transform a wasteland, around the school, into a medicinal garden using their own pocket money and donations from staff and parents. They consulted digital media, a nursery owner, their science teacher and a gardener for information on medicinal plants. They organised a rally and used digital media to raise funds and resources. This project set an example for their juniors on contributing to environmental sustainability, dignity for all, and community services.
Key Learnings
During the course, the team compiled clinical research on a cancer patient's case and witnessed amazing outcomes. The project can further be explored by the scientists and researchers, as the natural medicinal extracts from plants are more potent, efficacious and cost effective in comparison to the expensive allopathic medicines, commonly used during chemotherapy sessions.
The Impact
The project focused on enhancing collaboration and teamwork while teaching the impact of environmental sustainability on human life. The DC and ADC of Chakwal appreciated the efforts during the official visit to school, and helped convert the adjacent park into a medicinal garden. Awareness sessions were conducted in the school, on YouTube and social media in order to raise awareness about the benefits of planting medicinal gardens. A website was created to share research on the medicinal uses of common plants, including a clinical case study on a woman with breast cancer who was treated with herbal remedies. The herbs used in her treatment were found to have a synergistic effect and resulted in a noticeable reduction in tumour size.
Way Forward
The focus lies in promoting the growth of newly discovered medicinal herbs on a larger scale. This involves cultivating the plants in a dedicated medicinal garden and collaborating with experts to explore their properties, considering the modified growth environment. Additionally, efforts are made to engage pharmaceutical companies and encourage them to provide opportunities to local communities, thereby fostering the further development and promotion of this field in Pakistan. By combining cultivation, scientific exploration, and industry partnerships, the aim is to support the expansion of medicinal herb production, harness their potential benefits, and create opportunities for local populations in the pharmaceutical sector.
