SIX BRICKS

The Inspiration
Upon joining the IB program, the team became aware of their privilege compared to others. Witnessing the challenges faced by the less fortunate, they aimed to utilise their knowledge and commitment to improve opportunities for those in need. Their goal was to provide tools and information for a productive society that promotes socio-economic well-being. They addressed various issues like human rights, quality education, climate change, and gender equality through various projects. With the onset of Covid-19, their focus shifted to educating individuals about preventive measures and treatments.
The Journey
With their objectives in mind, the team established 'Six Bricks', a student-led welfare organisation, to uplift the community in the village of "Dadochha" near Islamabad. They focused on raising awareness about the transformative power of education, particularly for local youth. Through advocacy, they influenced the locals to prioritise and improve educational infrastructure. Engaging with the district administration, they advocated for a government school and renovation of the existing primary school. Collaborating with organisations like Sky School Orphanage and Bundh-e-Shams, they leveraged resources and expertise. 'Six Bricks' aims to empower the community through education and create a brighter future for local youth.
Key Learnings
The key learning is that government schools can receive much-needed renovations and new schools can be opened through letters to local officials. Initiatives such as helping youth avoid drug abuse, cleanliness drives, and tree planting can also be implemented in localities which would uplift the overall quality of life of the people residing in those areas.
The Impact
Initially, the local school in the village was neglected. 'Six Bricks' engaged with village residents, highlighting the importance of education and its benefits. This led to convincing the authorities to renovate the government school, providing an improved learning environment. They also facilitated the plantation of two hundred trees, cared for by locals. Book distribution enhanced students' knowledge and skills. Weekly workshops raised awareness on environmental sustainability through presentations and activities. Additionally, the team created awareness on drug abuse and established communication channels for support. The villagers responded positively, with changing perceptions of their surroundings.
