Responsible Consumption and Production
By
Ibrahim Bin Adnan

The Inspiration
The journey began with Ibrahim’s observations of the excessive plastic waste in his surroundings. He used his PYP project as a platform to research and find ways to reduce plastic waste by reusing it in many ways. He found out that he could, make tiles using old plastic.
The Journey
The project taught Ibrahim about tile-making and promoting his idea. He discussed with teachers and the school head, and visited sites for research. He wanted to share his idea globally.
The Process of Tile-Making
Making plastic tiles involves collecting and sorting waste plastic bottles after sorting them as per the mentioned code. Next is washing, cutting them into small pieces, and using a baking tray as a mould. Preheat oven to 180°C for 20 minutes and bake for 30 minutes at 180°C until the plastic becomes shiny. After cooling down, the weight is removed, and the tile is ready. Different types of plastic can be experimented with, but it's essential to be watchful until it melts.
Key Learnings
The journey has impacted Ibrahim’s school community and the family and how they use plastic at home and school. He learned to collaborate with people outside the school community, many facts about plastic pollution, and the people playing their part in this cause.
The school principal supported the initiative and helped showcase the idea and journey with the school community to ensure Ibrahim got the audience to appreciate his hard work.
The Impact
Ibrahim believes that the use of waste can make a lot of difference. Instead of sending plastic waste to landfills, collecting, sorting, and moulding it can solve two major issues the world is facing:
On – what to do with all the plastic and…
Two – everything degrades, some things faster than others, but Plastic generally does not.
When Ibrahim decided to make titles from plastic bottles, he identified that the tiles were cheap and could last 50 years. Therefore the use of it can make a huge difference.
As per Ibrahim, if the ancient Egyptians, Romans, or Greeks had discovered plastic tiles, we would visit ancient Greek buildings rather than ancient Greek ruins today.
Way Forward
Ibrahim intends to look for energy-friendly ways to implement the same idea and to reap the benefits in their most sustainable forms. He plans to collaborate with factory owners to import machinery that can help produce these tiles. Meanwhile, he continues to produce tiles on order and is working to provide them to his school for their pavement area.
