The Inspiration
The team found inspiration in the idea that a big change can start with a little hope during their involvement in the Beaconhouse Global Project on Sustainable Fashion on the Runway. To raise awareness about sustainable fashion, they created a documentary and shared it through various social media platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, and Blogs affiliated with their school. Building on their previous objective as members of the Kidpreneurship and Web Blogging Club, they are now aiming to transform into an inspirational platform for skilled underprivileged women. Their focus is on promoting sustainable fashion through the recycling and reusing of garments and repurposing leftover clothes from tailors.
The Journey
As part of their club activities, the team made the decision to pursue their passion and establish an eco-friendly business. They came up with a name and logo for their venture and proceeded to create a business plan with the goal of producing eco-friendly products. To acquire materials, they reached out to local tailors, thrift stores, and even collected waste materials from their own homes. The response they received exceeded their expectations, which was encouraging as they aimed to start the business as soon as possible. With a focus on denim fabric for its durability, cost-effectiveness, and style, they had already prepared several designs in advance. To handle the orders, they engaged their house help and provided her with the collected materials and designs. In due course, the team successfully launched their first batch of products.
Key Learnings
Their journey taught them the importance of taking charge of their own learning and developing their entrepreneurial skills. They encountered several challenges along the way, including unforeseen holidays, CATS assessments, ongoing school... activities, and the availability of team members and parental support. They also faced obstacles such as inflation, finding a skilled seamstress, identifying suitable marketing platforms, and attracting genuine online buyers. To overcome these challenges, they devised a strategy. The students initially planned to sell their products during their school culmination day to raise awareness within the school community. They also aimed to extend their reach beyond the school by distributing business cards and flyers. Their ultimate goal was to start receiving online orders and sponsorships, which would not only facilitate collaboration with other businesses but also expand their customer base. By addressing these challenges proactively and executing their strategic plan, they aspired to establish a successful business venture while promoting sustainable fashion and their eco-friendly products.
The Impact
Committed to sustainability and being agents of change, the team aims to reduce their carbon footprint and contribute to a cleaner world. They recognize the alarming 92 million tons of waste generated by the textile industry each year, with clothing and textiles alone accounting for 7% of global landfill waste. To combat this, their strategic planning involves expanding their product line, which increases the intake of waste clothes, drives sales, and creates opportunities for more women to be empowered while promoting a cleaner environment.
Their ultimate goal is to generate more profits for all stakeholders involved. By promoting sustainable fashion and offering eco-friendly products, they encourage responsible consumption among customers. Embracing sustainability allows them to reduce waste, minimize their carbon footprint, and contribute to a more conscious and environmentally friendly fashion industry. They firmly believe that by taking small steps and having hope, they can make a significant impact, creating cleaner and healthier living conditions for everyone and working towards a sustainable future.
Way Forward
This project aims to promote sustainable fashion and preserve traditional craftsmanship by producing high-quality products that meet global standards. The team's vision is to empower underprivileged women and gain national and eventually global recognition. The students aspire to establish their brand as a trusted and affordable solution for fashion and gifting needs. Their focus is on inclusivity, ensuring that their products cater to a diverse range of customers while upholding sustainability principles. By combining their passion for eco-friendly practices with their commitment to social empowerment, they strive to make a positive impact in the fashion industry and become a reputable and accessible brand worldwide.
